The annual event celebrates leadership in sustainability - rewarding both the New Zealand businesses that have already embedded sustainability, and those emerging companies that are accelerating fast.
In 2009, the awards theme was 'Reinvent to Thrive', attracting 150 entrants from across the spectrum of New Zealand business. This year the awards recognise 'Extraordinary Business'. As Sustainable Business Network CEO Rachel Brown explains "These are smart businesses that because of their sustainable planning have survived a recession and come out fighting. They are seeking or creating long-term solutions, to enhance social and environmental conditions and use their skills and influence to build a brighter future."
Last year's Sustainable Business of the Year and Trailblazer Large and Corporate Business was Auckland based ecostore, which develops, manufactures and sells environmentally friendly household products. For businesses that would like to enter the 2010 awards, more details can be found at www.sustainable.org.nz.
Each year the voting public also has the chance to get involved with the awards process, by participating in the online People's Choice Awards, which will run throughout October.
Jane Aubrey, Online Classifieds Sales Manager, NZ Herald, who is a driving force behind the new partnership, says "We are excited about the possibilities this partnership will bring and look forward to providing the Sustainable Business Network a strong media channel to showcase the great work that they do with New Zealand organisations who are growing their businesses through sustainable business practices."
