In memory of Maggie.

14 Mar 2017

We are so very sad to share the news that our dear and wonderful friend Maggie Lawton passed away yesterday morning, 13th March, after a short battle with cancer. Maggie was, among many things, a founding Board Member of the Sustainable Business Netw

Rachel Brown, CEO of the Sustainable Business Network, shares her memories of Maggie:

I first got to know Maggie when she became an active member of the Auckland Environmental Business Network back in the late 1990s. I got to know her more as she helped us establish the Sustainable Business Network Board. She was very smart, very engaged and extremely supportive.

Maggie brought tremendous skills, a plethora of impressive qualifications and tremendous energy to her work. She applied her expertise to resource management, infrastructure, sustainable building and urban design, water management and in improving community outcomes. Nearly every major sustainability effort here in NZ has had some of Maggie’s input. She worked for a number of years at Landcare Research. She held management roles in local government. She was a consultant and more recently an Otago Regional Councillor.

When I think of Maggie I will always remember her for her calm, confident, extremely informed way of being. But I will also remember her as a kick-boxing ski bunny with a wicked sense of fun. I’ll remember the beautiful eco-home she made, her love of red wine, music and the love and pride she had for her kids. She had energy to burn and a real joy for life. She was a phenomenal support for me at times when I needed that support. I am sure she has done that for many others. She will leave a huge gap in the lives of many in the sustainability movement here in NZ. She is a huge loss and I am gutted to know she is no longer around. We send our love and best wishes to her family, particularly Ella, Katrine, Hayley and her grandkids. I also want to acknowledge her much loved son Robbie, who passed away in 2014.  This is a very sad time for all of her family and friends.

In memory of Maggie we have started the process of supporting a waterway restoration project in the Wanaka area. Maggie was passionate about water and Otago. We will be working with the Queenstown Lakes District Council and Otago Regional Council to ensure her impact is enduring. In place of flowers please contribute to this special tribute project with Million Metres Streams. This project has the support of her daughters Ella, Katrine and Hayley, as well as support from her friend and colleague Alexa Forbes.

For those unable to attend her funeral, we will be having a gathering to share memories and raise a much-needed toast to Maggie here at the SBN office from 5pm Tuesday 21st of March. We are at level 3, 18 Customs Street East, above Little Bird & RJB Design. All who knew Maggie are welcome. We hope you will be able to join us.
