AgriSea Seaweed: improving farming practices.
AgriSea have developed a range of nutrient rich, natural liquid soil additives, which can be used to improve soil health in the agriculture, horticulture and viticulture sectors.
Organic/biological farm inputs that are well researched and add value on-farm, both environmentally and economically, provide alternatives for farmers and growers to the current, unsustainable inputs of synthetic fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. AgriSea uses beach-cast seaweed that is certified sustainable by SANZ (Seaweed Association of NZ).
AgriSea has funded a seven year research project on the ecological effects of the wild harvest of seaweeds on the marine coastal ecosystem. This is currently informing Ministry of Primary Industries’ policy and will contribute to a long-term sustainable seaweed industry for New Zealand.
Intensive farming practices and the continued use of synthetic fertilisers and chemicals are negatively impacting on New Zealand’s soil and waterway health. There is little point in ‘hammering’ farmers about environmental concerns unless there are viable alternatives. It behoves biological input manufacturers to prove the long-term value of their products. More sustainable biological methods of food production will result in healthy soil, waterways, plants, animals and people.
AgriSea has contributed to wide ranging changes in farm management strategies across many different sectors including: dairy, horticulture, viticulture, turf industry, sheep and beef. AgriSea believes that if farming practices are to change, biological or organic input providers need to be better than the big chemical companies at business, education, research, customer care and community support.
AgriSea Seaweeds was a finalist in Restorative Impact category at the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards.
