Christchurch Bike Share – Spark Bikes: crowdfunding bike sharing.
The ChchBikeshare project, launched in August 2015, is the first large-scale successfully crowdfunded bikeshare scheme in New Zealand and the second of its kind in the world.
The idea surfaced as a transitional public transport project in post-earthquake Christchurch, however it was deemed too permanent to lose.
With 40 bikes available from five stations, over the next two years the success of the scheme will be monitored and data collected will help the project to grow. After two years, the project will seek further funding.
Accelerating the uptake of cycling has benefits for health, wellbeing, retail, tourism and more. A bikeshare system makes it easier for residents to cycle and enables riding bikes as a means of transportation for short trips. ChchBikeshare has changed the landscape of public transport and people riding bikes for transport in New Zealand.
Christchurch Bike Share is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the Renewables Innovation category.
