Creative Spaces/Auckland Council/Fletcher Construction – office refurbishment and the circular economy.
Redesigning and refitting a 1990s building was a joint effort that saw 83 per cent of construction waste downcycled or recycled. It was arguably the largest interior refurbishment to date in Auckland.
The innovative re-use of existing materials, reductions in energy (39 per cent savings) and design were carried out to the specifications of the Green Star 5 certification.
The fit out, which covered 27 floors and 30,000 sqm in total, is an example of Circular Economy Model Office principles employing smart design. The key innovator in the redesign was using many small innovations together to make up the larger project, such as re-use of light fittings; reduction in water use through flow control (25 per cent savings); recycling of ceiling tiles; installation of worm beds for organic waste and an edible landscape roof garden; and downcycling of carpet products.
Creative Spaces/Auckland Council/Fletcher Construction are finalists in the Mega Efficiency Innovation category of the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
