Flick Electric Co.

Flick gives electricity consumers the ability to choose the price they want to pay for the electricity they want to use. It provides access to the wholesale cost of generation and local distribution.

Price signals are sent to Flick customers on a live half-hour basis, using Flick’s proprietary customer tools. When renewable generation is abundant, spot market prices tend to be lower and when dirty fossil fuels are running, spot prices tend to be higher. This gives consumers an incentive to consume electricity when it is cleanest.

In February 2016 Flick launched CHOICE, a world-first app that shows Kiwis the real carbon impact of electricity. For the first time, New Zealanders can make a choice about when they use electricity to reduce their environmental impact. The app sends users alerts when greenhouse gas emissions are especially high or low.

Flick is making its mark in an industry dominated by well-resourced incumbents. Its 13,000 customers are saving 20% on their electricity bills and checking the app around 15,000 times a month. Flick is also having an impact beyond its own customer base, since 20% of app users are non-customers.
