Food from Garden to Table.

Increasingly, children are disconnected from their food supplies, fail to recognise common vegetables, have limited ability to cook food and lack positive food experiences at home. It’s these issues the Garden to Table Trust seeks to address.

The Trust has created a curriculum-linked programme in 15 primary schools across New Zealand, which teaches young people to compost, manage pests, and seed save. In the kitchen, the children prepare dishes using their harvest and share the food with classmates, teachers and volunteers. The lessons are linked to the school curriculum for science, maths and social studies, and schools have seen the learning benefits for many children who flourish in a more hands-on learning environment.

The next project for the Trust is a major new facility in Wynyard Quarter, Auckland, for over 600 children from across inner city schools. The site will include a shared, organic edible garden; chickens; beehives; a green roof; rain water harvesting, and wind and solar panels. There will also be a kitchen classroom facility, showcasing the latest in sustainable building materials and systems. The new facility will be available outside of school days for other groups and events, making it truly a community space.

Garden to Table Trust was a finalist in the Community Innovation Award of the 2013 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards.

Garden to Table Trust

The focus of the Garden to Table Trust’s programme is to link the growing and harvesting of organically grown food to its preparation for eating and the appreciation and socialisation involved when food is shared and enjoyed together.
