Fulton Hogan / Tauranga Airport Authority.
Fulton Hogan designed and built a new long-term car park for Tauranga Airport Authority with a reduced environmental footprint through eco design, resourcing, logistics and construction management.
The project uses waste concrete from local businesses. The concrete, which is 100% recycled aggregate, is stockpiled and then crushed to form the base course of the car park.
Project savings include: reduction of concrete waste, saving 1,200 tonnes of raw aggregate production and 1,200 tonnes of concrete from landfill; recharging ground water aquifers, saving approximately 6,000,000 litres of annual runoff; soy resin based drainage chambers, saving approximately 3 tonnes of concrete and plastic; and back loading trucks and not carting from the quarry saving 1,700kg CO2
The project processes a waste product to turn it into a new material for local infrastructure. By supporting the clean fill, recycling process and use of recycled waste in infrastructure, Tauranga Airport sets an example for other businesses to follow.
Fulton Hogan and Tauranga Airport Authority received a Commendation in the Mega Efficiency Impact category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
