Transformation Areas

This story reflects success in the highlighted areas.

Good Neighbour Aotearoa Trust.

The Good Neighbour Aotearoa Trust’s vision is to help people transform their communities by putting ‘neighbour’ back into ‘neighbourhoods’.

The organisation provides practical opportunities for people to support one another so that lives and neighbourhoods are transformed.

Projects help people who want to help but don’t know where or how to be involved. For example the Food Rescue Service collects food that can’t be sold and redistributes to it local charities. The Community Gardens project enables people to grow their own vegetable.

At least 200 volunteers have contributed an estimated 7500 hours to their community over the last year. 300m3 of firewood and thousands of bags of recycled kindling have been distributed to families in need. 94 neighbourhood projects have been completed and three gardens developed with a total of 135 plots.

To date, 180 tonnes of food have been diverted from landfill, with an estimated value of $1,260,000. Food Rescue provides food to 35 different community organisations including: Maori Women’s Welfare League, Tauranga Women’s Refuge, Tauranga Food Bank, Shakti Ethnic Women’s support and the Tauranga Overnight shelter.

A core philosophy behind Good Neighbour is a desire to facilitate a community to help itself. It believes it will be effective when communities are empowered and people have hope, self-worth and dignity, and when every person is valued and connected.

Good Neighbour Aotearoa Trust received a Commendation in the Community Impact and Community Innovation categories of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
