Little Yellow Bird finalist story.
Little Yellow Bird uses an innovative business model to design and manufacture ethical corporate uniforms, supporting communities along the way.
The garment industry causes significant social and environmental problems, many of which are easily solvable. Little Yellow Bird knows each stage in the production process, from cotton seed through to shirt, and ensures that everyone along this chain is paid and treated fairly. It provides educational scholarships and micro-loans to people in the communities where products are made.
While the majority of production and impacts are in India, Little Yellow Bird is a huge campaigner for sustainable fashion and the importance of education. It works to highlight issues and encourage people to recycle and change their consumption habits.
There are no other ethical workwear brands in New Zealand. So far, Little Yellow Bird’s efforts equate to approximately 2000 garments made with respect for the environment and the people who made them. Wellington Zoo, Couplands Bakeries, SAFE and Woohoo Tax Refunds are all on board. This has enabled the funding of seven projects in India, supporting young girls to return to school and mothers to purchase foot pedal sewing machines to create a second source of income for their families.
Little Yellow Bird received a Commendation in the Community Innovation category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
