NZ Landcare Trust – community-driven catchment management.
NZ Landcare Trust is an independent, non-government organisation that promotes and delivers rural, community-driven catchment management initiatives at a national level.
Its goal is to harness the passion and energy that communities can bring to restoration and water quality enhancement programmes. It involves getting farmers, lifestyle block owners, foresters, conservationists and recreational users to work together to find shared solutions.
The Trust currently operates out of six regional offices, from Northland to Southland, with Hamilton acting as the head office. Each office delivers at least one community catchment project at any given time, largely focused on rural locations.
The success of the work revolves around getting people together – establishing community catchment groups and forming project partnerships with local and regional councils, conservation and recreational organisations, and the wider business community. This collaborative approach provides a framework for change and allows skills and techniques to be shared, creating a lasting positive impact in the community. To date over 50 independent community landcare or catchment groups have formed through the programme.
NZ Landcare Trust is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the Community Impact category.
