Scion has used sustainable chemistry principles to develop 100% bio-based adhesive systems for interior engineered wood panel products.
This is a practical response to consumer desire for sustainable products and concerns about air quality in internal office and living spaces. The bioadhesive eliminates the need for petrochemical additives and reduces fossil fuel emissions. It also adds value to by-products of the forestry industry, such as paper and packaging.
Free of toxic components, there are options for recycling or composting that are not available for petrochemical-containing products, which are currently disposed of in landfill. The new adhesive is 100% bio-based from renewable resources. It is formaldehyde free and water soluble with low toxicity.
A life cycle analysis found MDF (medium-density fibreboard) containing 10% bioadhesive made in New Zealand had a 22% lower environmental impact, due to reduced fossil fuel emissions, fewer human health impacts and more end of life options and benefits.
This is the only commercially-proven 100% bio-based adhesive for use in interior panel boards in the world. The innovation is patented.
