The Oversew Fashion Awards.
The goal of The Oversew campaign is to promote upcycled fashion with zero wastage. It celebrates talented, aspiring designers who recreate, revamp and redesign unwanted yet pre-loved clothes, giving old clothes new value.
Ministry for the Environment figures show 100 million kilos of textile waste is thrown into the country’s rubbish dumps yearly. This is the equivalent of every person in New Zealand throwing out 145 medium-sized men’s T-shirts a year.
As a small organisation with plenty of passion, the initiative has been promoted largely through social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) together with a limited budget for radio and print media. The organisation has partnered with More FM (Mediaworks) and Wairarapa News (Fairfax Media) to spread the word. In addition it has a daily newsletter with upcycling tips.
Strategic partnerships with Earthcare Environmental, Massey University’s ‘Space Between’, Wairarapa Building Society and Gladstone Vineyard help share the Oversew Fashion story through additional communication channels.
The Oversew Fashion Awards is a finalist in the Cadence Communications Communicating Sustainability category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
