We Compost finalist story.
We Compost is a commercial collection infrastructure for compostable waste – specifically post-consumer food waste, paper handtowels and compostable packaging.
The company began with one bin in September 2010 and today collects around 150,000 litres of compost waste bins per week.
The collection service takes waste that would have otherwise ended up in landfill and recovers it for composting.
The impact also reduces CO2 emissions and creates compost that can be used in agriculture to increase yield, reduce need for petrochemical fertilisers and pesticides, and increase water retention and stability of soil.
Since the company’s launch in 2010, We Compost has diverted almost two million kilogrammes of organic waste from landfill and helped customers avoid over 685 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
We Compost plans to engage on a deeper level with communities. It will launch a campaign where 10,000 litres of compost will be donated for every 1000 tonnes of organics collected, in the form of bags donated monthly to community groups and schools.
We Compost received a Commendation in the Restorative Impact category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
