Transformation Areas

This story reflects success in the highlighted areas.

Zealandia – restorative sanctuary for NZ wildlife.

Established 20 years ago, Zealandia is a 225 hectare fenced wildlife sanctuary in the Wellington region that was the first of its kind in the world.

A growing tourist destination, it is home to many native species, some of which were previously extinct in the wild. It is devoted to eradicating and controlling plant and animal pests, re-introducing wildlife species and protecting those that are endangered.

Managed by the Karori Sanctuary Trust, Zealandia operates as sustainably as possible, for example using energy-efficient lighting, composting organic waste, growing organic produce and installing beehives to help with local pollination. These initiatives are used to educate the 100,000 visitors a year on ways they can contribute with sustainable practices.

Some of Zealandia’s many achievements include the eradication of 14 species of mammalian pest; the reintroduction of 30 plant species and 17 wildlife species, six of which have been reintroduced to mainland New Zealand for the first time in 100 years or more; the planting of over 10,000 native plants; and the education of more than 17,500 children over the past three years.

Zealandia is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the Restorative Impact category.

ZEALANDIA

ZEALANDIA is a world first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, restoring native forest ecosystems through reintroducing native wildlife and wider conservation activities throughout Wellington.
