Ahika is a Māori word relating to sustaining the fire and keeping the home fires burning. For us, it means sustaining our community and our environment. We do this in a number of ways, including through land use management (for example planning for biodiversity, developing food production and through focusing on forestry for energy and carbon capture), energy management and sustainable behaviours. We work with our community to advocate and build resilience, specifically regarding food and biodiversity and we work with local businesses to research and advise about energy conservation and management and sustainable behaviours.
What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?
Ahika contributes to a more sustainable New Zealand through our philosophy of "keeping the home fires burning". Our whole organisation revolves around looking after what we have right here, right now. Our land, our people, our water, our air, our food, our energy and our communities. We work hard to build strong relationships with other organisations, whether business or community-based, to enable them to become more sustainable, through long-term land use planning and design, energy efficiency or behavioural change.
