Barbarian Productions Ltd..

Barbarian Productions is a theatre company, creatively bringing people together in fun, radical ways. We are focussed on community-building and progressive social change. Our work engages and activates broad audiences making complex ideas accessible.

We Are Barbarian.

We write, perform and make media that is fierce, funny and counter-cultural. We make work inside and outside of theatres, with groups and individuals, amateurs and professionals.

Our shows use clown, mask, music, song, dance, wigs and puppets – forms which we bastardise and fuse together to create unique hybrids. We often work with community groups and untrained actors – we like working with people who want their voice to be heard. We respond to new venues and forms. Our work ranges from large scale theatre works (Yo Future, White Elephant) to smaller, interactive street experiments with an online component (Brides, Help Us Change, Dress Up Jam).

We strive for a new economics in performance which allow a broader audience to participate in our work. We love strong and unusual voices, diversity and change. Art-making is the most efficient way we have found to ask complex questions and express radical politics, while maintaining our status as naive fools.

What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?

Barbarian actively seeks out collaboration and partnership with organisations that are sustainable and express meaningful social values. We are committed to providing fair wages to our employees and contractors and to responsible use of resources. Our home at the Vogelmorn Bowling Club in Wellington demonstrates our vision for sustainable arts practice, by working together with the Vogelmorn Community Group Trust and re-purposing this beautiful, kitschy property for community use.

Our vision is for a new economy of arts that removes financial barriers to art experiences and encourages active involvement in the arts by diverse communities. We encourage and practice resource-sharing, advocacy and social enterprise initiatives in the arts sector.
