Bicycle Junction is Wellingtons urban specialist bike shop. We are passionate about encouraging people to get out and ride for transport and enjoyment.
Though we’re a bike shop that sells, builds and fixes bicycles, they’re really just the means to an end; albeit a beautifully designed means to an idyllic end. Our job most importantly is to encourage as many people as we can to get out and ride for transport and enjoyment. We'd love to make riding a bike as commonplace as your morning cup of coffee, which by the way is our other obsession.
At Bicycle Junction our aim is to shift the mainstream perception of cycling from one solely related to sport and recreation to one that perceives cycling as a mainstream and logical form of transport and recreation for urban life. We will do this by growing engagement in the culture of cycling. Events such as our Gold Sprints, tweed rides, musical evenings in store, track stand competitions, bike repair workshops, Cargo bike shift-a-flat and bicycle-powered Cinema all contribute to making cycling a desirable activity.
We introduce New Zealanders to the styles of bike used for urban transport in other countries, many of which until now have not been available for purchase in New Zealand. Our products break down excuses used to avoid taking the leap to cycling and show people that they can live by bike.
Cargo Bikes - People need to take their kids to school, pick up the shopping, pick up the table they bought and therefore cannot ride a bike. Cargo-bikes can do all these things and open peoples eyes to the possibility of doing all the things they previously could only do by car, by bike. We organized our first “shift a flat” by bike With 12 cargo bikes we shifted a house full of belongings from one house to another. Over the winter we worked with some great Wellington businesses like Kaibosh Food Rescue, Garage Project Brewery, La Boca Loca and Flight Coffee to show how brilliant these cargo bikes are for shifting things around the city.
Classic bikes - Many people object to riding in a suit or in the rain. The upright riding position of classic bikes make riding in a suit or skirt straightforward while fenders ensure that when riding on wet roads your feet and back stay dry. When paired with one of our rain capes it is possible to stay completely dry when riding to work.
Folding bikes - Folding bikes make it possible to fly or use public transport while taking a bike. This multi modal form of transport is key for those who live too far from their workplace to ride all the way daily. We are the sole NZ dealer for Brompton folding bikes, the gold standard in folding bikes.
Electric bikes - Many people are too tired or unfit to ride a bike up a hill or against the wind Electric bikes make all NZ cities flat and windless allowing those who would otherwise not consider riding a bike to do so with ease.
What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?
Here at Bicycle Junction we are all about encouraging as many people as we can to get out and ride for transport and enjoyment.
We do this in a number of ways:
We sell beautiful bikes for daily urban riding and cargo bikes for moving people and stuff around town. We have a full workshop and sell all of the bits to make urban cycling a great experience for people. We are committed to making Wellington a place where people of all ages and abilities feel great about getting on their bikes, leaving their cars at home and bringing the urban experience to life.
We sell high quality bikes that will last. We don't sell cheap bikes that will end up in the landfill after a few years. We stock a carefully chosen range of bikes that will give you 10-20 years riding with minimal maintenance. Our bikes aren't cheap but are high quality and offer excellent value, we also offer a lower cost option of up-cycled used bikes instead of offering lower quality new bikes that will cause problems down the line.
Our shop in Newtown is a hub of local cycling culture and we run inspiring events that cultivate the movement of people choosing to ride in the city. We host music and film evenings at the shop, host the annual need for tweed ride with over 130 riders donning dapper threads and riding around the city in style. We are supporters of all city wide cycling events, the bikes in schools project and cycling without age, mechanical tempest community bike workshop, provide loans of cargo bikes for social projects and go the extra mile to make sure customers and non-customers come back to our shop again and again.
We'd love to make riding a bike as commonplace as your morning cup of coffee, of which we also make a superb one :)
