BioGro New Zealand Limited.
BioGro is New Zealand’s largest and best-known organic certifier. Our logo and brand has become synonymous with certified organics and appears on many iconic organic products seen on retail shelves today.
In New Zealand, you can’t trust an organic product as authentic unless it has organic certification. It is important to beware of imitations – products that say they are organic, but they can be far from it.
The BioGro logo is New Zealand's most recognised organic logo. BioGro certification and our logo assists consumers in being able to identify authentic organic produce.
All our certified licensees carry our logo on their products to assure their customers that the organic products they buy are genuine and truly free from GMO, the routine use of pesticides and chemicals, animal testing and are ‘good for you’ in every sense of the phrase. To know you're really buying organic, look for the BioGro logo.
Over the last 30 years we have gained the trust of over 600 organic producers throughout New Zealand and the Pacific. Our licensees come from all sectors of the organics industry – from winegrowers, to farmers, retailers, cosmetic manufacturers and everything in between.
BioGro's sole focus on organics means we can provide our licensees with specialised knowledge and on-going technical support throughout the entire certification process.
Organics is riding a surge in popularity; globally, sales of organics are burgeoning and will only continue to grow. In most international markets, any produce that claims to be organic has to be certified. We have taken steps to gain international accreditations to continue providing overseas markets access to our licensees. BioGro now has accreditation for eight countries. BioGro certification and our logo is world-renowned and highly respected in major international markets including the US, Europe, Australia and parts of Asia.
Over the last three decades we have expanded into new up-and-coming markets including organic cosmetics and skincare. All around the world, consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of not only what they eat or where their food comes from, but what they put on their skin. We now certify some of the biggest beauty and cosmetics companies in New Zealand. Trilogy, Plantae, Antipodes and World Organic included and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?
Let’s talk about something that has been central to our story since 1983. Sustainability.
Sustainability is at the core of everything we do and everything we stand for. We certify hundreds of producers around New Zealand and the Pacific to make sure their practices are environmentally sound and sustainable.
We wouldn't still be around today if we didn't believe 100 per cent in organics and that we are contributing to a better New Zealand. The early pioneers of organics certainly weren't in it for the dollar signs.
Back in 1983, Bob Crowder, Jim Kebbell and Perry Spiller formed an organics council, now known as the New Zealand Biological and Consumers Society. BioGro and our registered logo are one of three charities owned by the Society. The Society’s primary mission was to develop New Zealand’s first set of credible, internationally respected, organic standards and certification processes to ‘safeguard’ the interests of both producers and consumers. We still adhere to these standards today.
Nowadays, we certify some of the biggest brands in New Zealand, as well as a few ‘hidden gems'. There’s Karma Cola whose cola nut is sourced directly from an indigenous community in West Africa, Commonsense Organics who are one of our biggest retail chains, Kokako Coffee who claim sustainability is in their ‘DNA,’ to our many organic vineyards and wineries such as Villa Maria, Pernod Ricard, Yealands and Seresin, who harvest their organic vines without the routine use of pesticides or herbicides. The list goes on.
Every single one of our licensees is doing their bit for creating a sustainable New Zealand. That’s why they’re BioGro certified.
