Inspired by the Italian tradition, we are a locally owned and operated Christchurch coffee roastery and are Fairtrade certified. We package our award-winning coffee in compostable bags (the films in our bags are certified compostable to EN13432).
Caffe Prima literally means “first coffee” and we are all about consistently extracting excellence from each roast and coffee-making method. Having shaped our coffee after the Italian tradition, we roast Arabica beans several times a day in an Italian imported Petroncini roaster in the industrial area of Woolston.
Not only are we a locally owned and operated business, but we are Fairtrade certified because we think ethical and equitable business practice is important - our membership number is 18245. We have also developed compostable bags for freshly roasted coffee - the films that make up our bags are certified compostable to the EN 13432 standard, which means that they breakdown when disposed of in composting conditions (containing heat, water, oxygen, soil and micro-organisms).
We have several award-winning blends, including our Fairtrade Verde which won a silver medal in the Best Ethically traded category at the 2015 NZ Coffee Awards.
What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?
We are Fairtrade certified - because we believe that supporting ethical business practices is important.
We purchase a beans from Asprounion (FT certified), which was founded on Fair Trade principles in order to give the farmers the ability to control and benefit from every stage of the coffee process: from growing to processing to exporting.
We have developed compostable coffee packaging for freshly roasted coffee (the films that make up our bags are certified compostable to the EN 13432 standard, which means that they breakdown when disposed of in composting conditions containing heat, water, oxygen, soil and micro-organisms) and given clear instructions on how to dispose of these on the packaging itself.
We offer discounts for those customers bringing reusable containers for beans and reusable cups for hot coffee into the roastery.
We have split our waste into streams: composting, recyclables and landfill. We also seek ways to repurpose things such as our empty coffee sacks (given to community gardens and bean keepers), use grinds for gardens etc.
We make collective decisions and staff can have flexible hours to work around family commtiments (we are a family run business).
We donate Fairtrade coffee to groups like the University of Auckland Fairtrade Club to promote better purchasing practices.....
