Conscious Consumers’ is a business accreditation programme and consumer movement that helps hospitality businesses respond effectively to increasing consumer demand for environmentally and socially responsible products and services.
Conscious Consumers was successfully introduced to the café sector in Auckland, Waikato and Wellington in 2010-12, and has recently expanded to the wider hospitality sector and the South Island. The programme accredits hospitality businesses and businesses that supply ethical/sustainable products and services to the hospitality sector. The programme has been developed in consultation with industry leaders, waste collectors and community groups.
Nearly $500,000 of funding has been received to date, including a recent major contribution from the Ministry for the Environment Waste Minimisation Fund. A significant portion of the funding has been spent launching the hospitality sector programme, developing an online business appraisal system and building a free smartphone application for consumers.
