The Underground Market is Wellington's weekly designer market. Showcasing the region's best artisans, designers, makers and bakers every Saturday 10am to 4pm (also open Sundays during the September/October school holidays and leading up to Christmas)

Who are we?

In 2007 finding quality design in Wellington was a little more difficult than it needed to be - for both tourists and locals...

Wendy Jasper and Helena Tobin saw this gap and were determined to create a buzzing platform for the huge creativity they saw in Wellington.

Surely there was a way to support New Zealand artisans and designers, whilst serving all of those local and international shoppers with great taste?

After two years of hard work in securing a venue, and a great selection of creative locals (many of whom are still at the market today) the Wellington Underground Market was born on the waterfront, just in time for the summer sun and fresh Wellington breezes of December '09.

It's come a long way since then. Wellington Creative, the company behind the markets, is now the trusted authority on markets in Wellington. It has expanded both in staff (it takes more than two these days) and in endeavours, now offering the much loved waterfront summer Pop-Up Village (est. 2014) with other initiatives in the pipeline.

Our aims remain the same, to enable artists to make a living from their craft.

  • The company, its staff and clients enjoy sustainable practices and economic success.

  • Artists, designers, crafters, makers and bakers (clients) make a sustainable living from their craft.

  • Wellingtonians and tourists enjoy inspiring interactive experiences of the “creative capital”

Any season, rain or shine - we'll see you there!
