ACTION – Plastic Free July.
4 Jul 2017
Plastic Free July is here! It’s not too late to get on board! Join SBN on the challenge to refuse all single-use plastic.
Plastic Free July aims to draw attention to how much single-use plastic is used and discarded every day. The challenge is to find alternatives.
SBN wants you to join us by refusing single use plastic this July.
A month may seem like a long time, but the truth is that every day you reduce your use of single use plastic the less of it will end up in landfill.
Single use plastic is any plastic that is designed to be used once and then thrown away. The big four are plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic cups, and plastic containers.
Not all plastic is or can be recycled. A lot ends up in landfill or worse, scattered around in our countryside, rivers and oceans. This breaks up but does not break down.
The best method to avoid the harmful impacts of plastics is to avoid using it.
Here are 11 ways to cut single use plastic out of your life:
Eating on the go?
- Bring your lunch in a reusable container
- Opt for reusable food wraps
- Carry a reusable drink bottle
- When buying food, bring a reusable container and use your own reusable utensils including cutlery and chopsticks
- Bring your own reusable cup
- Or slow down and dine in
- Refuse the plastic straw - bring your own reusable one
- Bring your own refillable shopping bags and mesh produce bags
- Consider what you can bake/make/cook at home and stick to your shopping list of those ingredients
- Avoid single servings - buy in bulk
- Use refillable bottles

And while you’re feeling clever why not why check out the EMF $2m Innovation Challenge? The challenge supports keeping plastics out of our oceans by fundamentally rethinking the way we make, use and re-use plastics. That way they don’t become waste in the first place.
