Our purpose at Blue Cars is to accelerate the uptake of Electric Vehicles in New Zealand. By providing EV’s (Nissan Leaf) through rentals and experience packages, we enable people a chance to try the EV phenomenon before committing to a purchase.
Given the rapid pace of development over the last few years, electric vehicles have become an increasingly viable and attractive option the world over. As a country, New Zealand is even more suited to this rapidly evolving technology than most, thanks to our ideal climate and high proportion of locally produced renewable energy. Blue Cars was started with the purpose of accelerating the uptake of Electric Vehicles (EV) in New Zealand. We want to convince Kiwi’s that owning an EV is a really, REALLY good idea. We aim to achieve this through EV rentals and experiences in the Auckland and Northland area.
Our rentals act like any other company, but it’s our “EV experience” where the true value lies. This experience involves an introductory lesson on how to manage an EV, full contact and support, and various discount on equipment and purchase price. Check it out at: http://www.bluecars.nz/
To top it off, we have organised an optional six day Northland trail for tourists and Kiwi’s alike to tour the countryside and understand how realistic and amazingly cheap EVs can be. Check out the trail here: http://www.revup.net.nz/EVTrail.aspx
Most people think EV adoption is unrealistic and expensive. It’s slowly becoming clear the opposite is true; a near-new (under 10,000 km) imported Nissan Leaf can now be purchased for under $20,000. Running costs are as cheap as $3.50 per 100km, or approx 30c per litre equivalent. A Nissan Leaf has a realistic range of up to 120km on one charge – perfect for the daily commute, which in Auckland is averaged around 45km per day. Plugging it in is even easier – a Nissan Leaf can plug into any 10 amp socket in your house – all you need is a long enough extension cable! If you own an inbuilt garage, most likely you’ll have a socket handy.
Furthermore, if you have a 15 amp socket available (or get one wired in for minimal effort), you can charge your car in half the time. The 8 amp converters for the 10 amp sockets take approx 8 hours, while the 15 amp chargers take only approx 4 hours. The 15 amp charger comes with the Leaf on purchase – we provide the 8 amp charger to make life much more convenient!
Savings? If you’re spending about $100 on gas a week – that’s up to $4000 savings a year. If you have solar, you’re saving even more.
The charging network for EVs is rapidly growing in New Zealand. For a quick and easy look at this, check out the Plugshare app or have a look online. This program shows all the charging points across the world that Plugshare users have volunteered the use of.
Auckland’s Plugshare network is steadily increasing: http://www.plugshare.com/
Our goal is to reduce pollution, lower the imports and reliance on oil, and instead promote our clean, local, natural energy from all our sustainable sources. We do this through convincing as many Kiwi's as possible that now is the time to purchase an EV; they're smarter, faster, cleaner and CHEAPER.
We are a new business so we cannot list any awards or display any concrete statistics on how we've influenced change. However, know that we are working behind the scenes everyday to push these initiatives, and soon we will be incredibly happy with the change we will be helping to facilitate!
