  • Profile

Covering 9,666 square kilometres, our DHB serves a population of 214,910 and stretches from Waihi Beach in the North West to Whangaparaoa on the East Cape and inland to the Urewera, Kaimai and Mamaku ranges.

Our population has the second fastest growth rate of all New Zealand’s DHBs. Our total population growth in the planning period 2006 to 2026 is forecast to be 23.5%, higher than that for New Zealand as a whole. The majority of the growth is expected to be in the Western Bay of Plenty region (particularly Tauranga city) with the Eastern Bay of Plenty expected to experience a static or declining population. In this regard, 77% of our population resides in the Western Bay of Plenty.

    Sustainability Actions:

Bay of Plenty District Health Board has a newly established Green Team who are strategically considering how to become a more sustainable District Health Board and contribute to a more sustainable NZ.

We have previously employed a sustainability coordinator, who supported a range of internal initiatives (waste reduction, staff carpooling scheme etc.), and this is something that is currently being considered again.

Furthermore the work of Toi Te Ora, the Public Health Unit for the Bay of Plenty (and Lakes) districts, includes a range of initiatives which support both health and environmental sustainability, including policy advocacy regarding the built environment, transport and food security. Please see www.ttophs.govt.nz for more information.

We are also a proud member and supporter of the National Good Food Network (a Sustainable Business Network initiative).

Also, recently the Whakatane Hospital was donated a peach tree which has been planted on site as part of a local community initiative support food security.
