In response to a spillage of 1000 litres of purple dye into the Oruarangi awa (stream), representatives of Makaurau marae, Auckland Council and the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board came together to create a programme to protect the stream.
The programme also aimed to help prevent future disasters from happening.
The objectives of the collaboration were to recognise the role of iwi as kaitiaki of their awa and involve them in the pollution prevention programme; and to prevent further contaminant spills.
The resulting Industry Pollution Prevention Programme (IP3) provided some 140 businesses with information about pollution prevention. Sixty of the businesses had onsite visits from iwi representatives, and one major spillage was potentially avoided as a result of the advice received.
Auckland Council is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the Peter Yealands Restorative Innovation category.
