Auckland Transport is making a real difference to the uptake of lower carbon transport in Auckland through three people-focused programmes: Travelwise Choices, Walking and Cycling, and Transport Operations.
Travelwise Choices focuses on reducing single occupancy vehicle use on the journey to and from work. Auckland Transport is working with 192 organisations and has held over 200 travel expos. In May 2017 the Smart Travel (car-pooling) app was launched. More than 1,000 people had registered by the end of June.
A Walking Challenge in March 2017 attracted over 5,000 participants, while the Love to Ride cycling challenge logged over 42,000 cycle trips made by almost 4000 participants in February 2017. The Urban Cycleways Programme has resulted in 27 kilometres of new cycleway. There has been a 62% increase in cycling trips in the city centre compared to 2013.
The Transport Operations programme is focused on rapid, high frequency public transport. It includes new and improved transit / bus priority lanes.
The programmes are changing commuters’ travel behaviour. They are resulting in a growing number of high quality travel choices for all Aucklanders.
Auckland Transport is a finalist in the Smarter Transport category of the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
