Bluebird, a subsidiary of PepsiCo, operates a snack food manufacturing facility in Manukau, employing more than 400 staff. The company is committed to continually improving its environmental performance and achieving greater resource efficiency.
In recognition of this the company is ISO 14001 certified.
Bluebird Foods runs four key initiatives that are regulated by performance indicators, including reduction in water use, waste recycling, collaboration and educating staff on sustainable practices.
Following these guidelines, Bluebird Foods had a 25 per cent reduction in water use from 2014 to 2015, it reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill by 51 per cent from 2011 to 2015, and it recycles 96 per cent of its manufacturing waste. In collaboration with another company its Starch Lifecycle Initiative currently supplies 54 tonnes a month of starch that is used to manufacture compostable trays.
