Comvita is working in partnership with New Zealand landowners, including Iwi, to plant low-productive land areas with Manuka.
Manuka planting optimises land utilisation and increases returns on marginal land. It provides landowners with additional revenue from honey and pollination. Jobs are created in local communities through nurseries, planting and beekeeping operations. Planting also offsets carbon and protects waterways by planting along riparian strips.
The Comvita Manuka Planting Programme has committed to planting 11,500 hectares by 2021. Already a total of 1,000 hectares of Manuka have been planted around New Zealand.
Since 2011 Comvita has been part of a Primary Growth Partnership with Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) and the Manuka Research Partnership Ltd. This programme has seen the establishment of approximately 30 high performance Manuka plantations in the Hawkes Bay, Bay of Plenty and other parts of New Zealand.
Comvita is a finalist in the Restorative Impact category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
