Ethique – solidifying change in the beauty industry

Ethique (formerly called Sorbet) makes waste-free, salon quality, beauty and bathroom products such as shampoos, soaps and conditioners.

Unique in the world, all products are made in solid form, requiring less water than a standard shampoo, and come packaged in water-soluble paper or compostable cardboard boxes rather than plastic bottles or jars. 

Certified as a B Corporation and cruelty-free, Ethique doesn’t test on animals and only uses ethical, naturally-derived ingredients. A key goal is tackling consumer waste with the biodegradable packaging preventing more than 34,000 packaging units going to landfill.   The company runs a waste free office, with 100 per cent energy from renewable sources; it donates 20 per cent of profits to charities; and it pays staff above the Living Wage.

The company successfully raised $200,000 in an equity crowdfunding campaign in June 2015. The investment will be used to develop and expand into the international market with a goal of being in the Northern Hemisphere by 2017. 

Ethique is a finalist in the Ricoh Mega Efficiency Innovation and Peter Yealands Restorative Innovation categories of the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
