Gareth founded The Morgan Foundation, a charitable organisation focused on conservation, public policy education and social development.
His conservation initiatives include Million Dollar Mouse, (a pest eradication project to remove mice from New Zealand’s Antipodes Islands); Enhancing the Halo (making Wellington’s back yards safe havens for natural wildlife); Predator Free NZ; Predator Free Stewart Island; and a project encouraging responsible cat management so our native fauna can thrive. He also campaigns to improve the quality of New Zealand’s rivers and make them swimmable again.
Gareth also has an ongoing programme which informs the public about the climate change issues facing New Zealand and what we can do about them. He doesn’t shy away from challenging issues. He cares deeply about what he does and is prepared to stand up for what he believes in, often in the face of criticism. He is good at getting the ‘conversation’ started, and then using innovative ideas to engage others to work together towards a common goal.
Gareth believes that a well informed and educated public will usually make reasoned decisions. Through his articles, blogs and books, he has provided independent evidence and encouraged debate.
In November 2016 he started a new political party, The Opportunities Party, focused on wellbeing.
Gareth received a Commendation in the Sustainability Champion category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
