Global Action Plan Oceania (GAPO) operates and manages a zero waste network across Auckland. This includes many initiatives designed to disrupt the traditional take-make-waste model.
GAPO runs a community recycling centre and two satellite waste re-use facilities, which all treat waste as a resource. The company deals with over 5000 tonnes of waste per year at its recycling centres, achieving a diversion rate of over 68% from landfill.
GAPO offers practical interventions including a repair café trailer, polystyrene bailing machine, free battery recycling drop-off, and bike recycling. It runs a community wood reuse project which makes furniture out of waste wood.
Through its circular economy office waste project, it has managed over 150 tonnes of office furniture. It has reused over 70%, and re-homed it free of charge or at low cost to organisations and people looking for a sustainable alternatives.
Global Action Plan Oceania is a finalist in the Going Circular category of the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
