Junk Run is the only waste collection company to sort and separate materials onsite, at source, and transport them off-site manually.
The company’s hands on approach to waste management makes a significant contribution to the environment by reducing the flow of builders’ waste to landfill and redistributing waste materials for reuse and recycling.
This is achieved through a two-pronged approach: Junk Run has established Auckland’s first bin-free waste collection service for builders, and developed a focused builders’ waste education service.
The waste disposal service is unique in its commitment to finding opportunities for reuse and recycling of materials, and partnering with charitable and commercial organisations, recyclers, and hobbyists to ensure maximum reuse of materials. The education service suggests how deconstruction practices can be improved to ensure more efficient waste disposal.
Junk Run works with more than 60 construction companies. In the last year, nearly 60% of the builders’ waste collected by Junk Run was diverted from landfill, including 60 tonnes of plaster board, 38 tonnes of glass, 114 tonnes of timber, and 312 m3 of scrap metal. All reusable items were diverted to charities or commercial enterprises for reuse or resale.
Junk Run received a Commendation in the Restorative Innovation category of the 2016 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
