Lux Organics is Rotorua’s first certified organic market garden. It grows nutritious and organic specialty produce for an organic food coop, farmers’ market and cafés and restaurants in the Rotorua area.
Rather than grow to a large commercial scale, it has chosen to stay as a family operation that can model to others how easily biodiverse organic growing can be carried out. Everything works with nature to maintain healthy soils and plants full of colour and flavour.
Lux prepares all garden beds using only hand tools. Crop planning and rotations achieve very high productivity and profitability per unit area. At least 28 commercial crops are grown and delivered by a 100% electric van. Salad bags are made from renewable, GM-free corn that can break down in a home compost.
Lux has been training students from Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in organic production methods and has also mentored several other small market gardeners.
