The Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust undertakes programmes and initiatives to beautify Auckland. The vision of its Eye on Nature initiative is, “Plant a seed and grow a young mind to engage positively in ongoing environmental activities”.
The trust created a four day event that involves school children in years five and six from South Auckland in learning-driven, hands-on educational activities. The event culminates on its fourth day where children can bring along their families, whanau and community to a free event hosted at the Auckland Botanic Gardens to showcase their work over the previous three days.
Throughout the year key environmental partners meet to plan the educational components for the children. Components are designed to ensure that children can use the tools they have learnt, and are encouraged to share their new skills with family members and friends.
The inaugural event was held in 2013 with more than 5000 attendees, and the 2015 event held over 10,000 attendees. As the event continues to grow, so does the number of organisations and schools wishing to take part. At present, the trust has over 25 partners and more than 500 volunteers that contribute to its development.
Manukau Beautification Trust is a finalist in the 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in the EcoPro Cleaning Co Community Innovation Award.
