Mike Sammons – Programme Sustainability Manager, Foodstuffs NZ

Since starting at Foodstuffs NZ in 2012, Mike has made enduring changes to enable Foodstuffs to lead the conversation and practices around retail sustainability.

He heads a team which is driving down waste at more than 500 stores. Almost six million meals have been donated to foodbanks and charitable organisations, and plans are in place to replace unnecessary packaging with 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging by 2025. Foodstuffs has already removed microbeads, plastic-applicator tampons, plastic cotton buds and oxo-degradable plastics from stores, and Mike has led the transition from polystyrene meat trays to a 100% recyclable product. Foodstuffs has changed to more sustainable refrigeration systems, championed solar power and established New Zealand’s largest electric vehicle fast charger network in partnership with ChargeNet.

Mike’s tenacity, commitment and grasp on how best to roll out change in a big business is exceptional.
