Peter Yealands is the founder and owner of Yealands Family Wines.  He has powered the sustainability heartbeat of the state-of-the-art winery since its bold beginnings in 2008.

Peter’s commitment to the landscape of his winery runs deep because it is also his home. His insistent fundamental belief that sustainability is an all-encompassing way of life permeates every aspect of the day-to-day Yealands operation, from the farthest reaches of the extensive vineyard through to the last bullet point of boardroom strategy.

Peter has a deeply-rooted connection to the New Zealand landscape, caring passionately about preserving and enhancing its outstanding natural beauty for generations to come. Before founding Yealands, he pioneered work in the marine farming industry, established one of the country’s most successful deer farms, and showcased his dedication to sustainable native forestry planting in an award-winning Marlborough Sounds estate.

Domestically and internationally, all Yealands wines are delivered with a carbon zero footprint, with Peter also spearheading a paradigm-shifting 100% recyclable PET bottle and an average bottle weight decrease of 11%.  Yealands is now the sixth largest wine producer in New Zealand and the fastest growing supplier. The brand has garnered 700+ international awards, including being named the world’s best Sauvignon Blanc at the 2012 London World Wine Challenge.

It is Peter’s hands-on approach that drives and inspires the continual innovation that withholds Yealands’ position as the world’s first carboNZero winery. He is actively involved in restoration, conservation and work on the vineyard.

It is this irrepressible determination to keep moving forward that has seen Peter named as the 2013 Lincoln University South Island Farmer of the Year. Admiring his ‘visionary tenacity’, the judges were impressed by Peter’s unswerving passion for the land, guiding his holistic sustainability philosophy and highly innovative, entrepreneurial ‘can do’ spirit.

Peter Yealands was a finalist in the Sustainability Champion category at the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards. Yealands Family Wines was awarded the NZI Supreme Award for the Greatest Contribution to a Sustainable New Zealand.
