In its sixth year, the #LeadingTheCharge Road Trip is now an annual fixture amongst electric vehicle enthusiasts.
For 2020 though, the road trip has reinvented itself as a Road Tour “rally style.” For the first time, there will be separate, but concurrent, North Island and South Island tours. Instead of concentrating on Rides and Drives events at each stop, the road tour will truly be all about the EV owners themselves, with a view to developing and fostering friendships and contacts amongst the EV community. There will be organised visits at each stop to places of interest, such as the Te Mihi Geothermal electricity generating plant. An outline of all the local tours will be promoted closer to the time, with organisers The Better NZ Trust currently formalising backstage entries.
“We’ve been running these road trips since 2015,” says Better NZ Trust treasurer Sean Dick, “so we know how to co-ordinate charging requirements along the way.”
“Businesses are welcome to join the #LeadingTheCharge 2020 Road Tour. They may wish to promote their business with vehicle signage and handouts. We are sure to draw a crowd of interested public wherever we stop. We are also looking for an overall sponsor to help pay for entrant gift bags,” says Kathryn Trounson, chairperson of the charitable trust.
EV Owners will need a vehicle capable of going a minimum distance of 200km without charging. Entry level or low range EV owners may wish to share driving with other owners or borrow a business-owned EV.
“It was decided that taking a month off, to travel the usual Bluff to Cape Reinga route, was too much for most enthusiasts. This year it is expected that most EV Owners will choose either the North or South Island route, or just join for a few legs of either. However, there is the opportunity to start on one island and switch to the other island when they pass through the Marlborough or Wellington regions. Last year, a few Tesla owners used the opportunity to take their vehicles to the Tesla service centre in Auckland for annual servicing,” says Mrs Trounson.
The #LeadingTheCharge 2020 EV Road Tour will be held during International Drive Electric Week September 26th – October 3rd 2020. For more information, or to register your interest visit : https://www.leadingthecharge.org.nz/ltc_2020_road_tour.
