The 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards are now open for entry with all new categories. Don’t miss the chance to be recognised for your sustainability progress.
The NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards are New Zealand’s longest-running and pre-eminent sustainability awards. They are now in their 15th year.
This year the Awards have fresh new categories that better reflect the key areas of sustainable business in New Zealand. You can enter in one or more categories.
Entry to the Awards is free and open to anyone in New Zealand.
The new categories are:

Individuals can make a big difference to sustainability – whether they’re at the highest level or on ‘the shop floor’. Have you brought about change and inspired others?
Sponsored by Cadence Communications
Sustainability is more than making sure you have your own house in order. It’s also about effectively communicating what you do, to the right people, through the right channels, to inspire people to act differently. Is that you?
Is your organisation consistently improving people’s lives through its day to day business practices? Is social good integrated throughout the whole organisation?
The best organisations look far beyond their own walls. They create and foster partnerships that generate positive impacts on people’s lives – on health, nutrition, housing, employment, community and more. Are you partnering for good?
Sponsored by Auckland Council
Traditional businesses are predominantly based on a linear ‘take-make-waste’ model. But as pressure on resources grows, we need to shift to a more circular economy – where the lifecycle of materials is maximised, usage optimised, and at the end of life all materials are re-used. Is your organisation making demonstrable progress towards going circular?
Sponsored by Ricoh
Pressure on resources is greater than ever, so businesses need to make significant resource saving improvements to their operations. Is your organisation minimising consumption and reliance on non-renewable resources?
Sponsored by Opus International Consultants
We need a revolution in transport away from fossil fuels and towards low carbon, efficient and people-focused transport solutions. Are you using clever design, new technology or behaviour change to achieve this?
Sponsored by EECA Business
We need clean, affordable and secure energy systems that result in zero carbon emissions and put people first. Are you transforming your own energy system or helping create a systemic shift to renewable energy?
Sponsored by Yealands Family Wines
Businesses have a vital role to play in making sure everyone has access to good food, through the way food is produced, made, distributed and sold. Is your organisation transforming the food system to create a positive impact on people or the environment?
Sponsored by the Department of Conservation
Our nature is the foundation of New Zealand’s economic, cultural and social success, but it is under pressure. We need every business to be part of restoring the bedrock of our economy. Are you taking a leadership role?
Our supreme award is the NZI Greatest Contribution to a Sustainable New Zealand. This will be awarded to a business that has performed outstandingly well in all aspects of sustainability. In 2016 it was won by Air New Zealand and in 2015 by Taupō Beef.
Rachel Brown, CEO of the Sustainable Business Network, says: “Given the rather grim global climate, sharing stories of positive action addressing social and environmental issues is more important than ever. Entering these Awards is a quick and easy way to celebrate your achievements.”
Travis Atkinson, Executive General Manager of NZI, the Principal Sponsor of the Awards, says: “We’ve been proud supporters of the Sustainable Business Network and national awards for the last 10 years. As an organisation that provides business insurance for a growing New Zealand, being sustainable is really important to us – it’s fundamental to the way we do business. We’re strong believers in the SBN’s mission to inspire change. We look forward to meeting the new sustainability leaders of 2017.”
Entries are open until 4 August. Finalists will be announced at the end of August and will be asked to provide further information. The winners will be announced at a black tie gala ceremony on Auckland’s waterfront on 30 November.
