SBN’s annual Secrets to their Success event, which showcases winners of the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards, will this year be held at our new member Hallertau Brewery’s premise in Riverhead. Read on to learn more about the brewery and sustai
Hallertau Brewery’s husband and wife team, Stephen and Hayley Plowman, have been brewing up beautifully-crafted beers at their Riverhead premises for the last ten years.
In June, they’ll be swinging open the doors of their new brewery, three times the size of the old one, to keep up with Hallertau’s ever-increasing demand (up until 18 months ago products were only sold in Auckland and they are now selling nationwide), and taking an SBN-led troup through the brewing process at the launch of our 2015 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards.
A new member, Hallertau has always prioritised sustainability. It is currently in the process of putting 20 kilowatts of solar on the brewery’s roof, which will provide around 25 per cent of the power usage, and is installing a beer garden, set to be finished by October, which will have 100 hop plants to create a fresh hop beer each year.
Stephen brews while Hayley looks after the restaurant. The menu has been developed by Boy & Bird chef Mike Van de Elzen (also a mentor in our Good Food Boost programme) and focuses on locally-sourced, seasonal dishes. It also sells tap wine, sourced from local wineries within 10 kilometres, and focuses on reducing packaging, offering refillable flagons since they began.
You can go on a tour of the brewery at our Secrets to their Success event on 16th June, at which we’ll be launching the 2015 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards. It’s a great opportunity to network, pick up winners’ secrets and judges’ tips – and sample freshly-brewed craft beer.
