New SBN Member Pledge – what will you commit to?

By Fiona Stephenson

At SBN we’re privileged to work alongside some of New Zealand’s smartest companies, organisations that are making a real difference to the wellbeing of people and nature. Yet we’ve never been able to quantify this collective impact, and nor have we asked our members to make this type of formal commitment to sustainability – until now.

We have launched a new Member Pledge, which we’re asking all our members to sign up to each year. It’s a sustainability commitment. We’re interested to find out about their overall sustainability and climate goals, and about the key action areas. They can choose from topics including transport, waste, water, energy efficiency, wellbeing, food, carbon reduction and more.

Rachel Brown, CEO of the Sustainable Business Network, says: “We’re on a mission to show the positive impact our members have on New Zealand. We want to know the contribution, large and small, each of us makes so Aotearoa can be a great place for people and nature.

“We know our members want to take action to make this happen. So we’re asking them to make a sustainability commitment each year. We really need to show that business cares and is active!”

The Pledge is easy to complete and has already been sent to our key contact at each member organisation. It’s designed to complement any existing reporting our members may already carry out. We’re asking for the pledge survey to be completed by the end of May.

Brad Kirner is General Manager at Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari. He says: “We have a very genuine commitment towards marine conservation and responsible tourism in New Zealand. The SBN Pledge isn’t just a nice thing to say our business is supporting – importantly, for me, it holds real-world value as working through it provided clear pathways for tangible action.

“The ideas, initiatives, examples and links that the SBN team have pulled together have already inspired further improvements in the sustainability of our operation, improvements that I believe will also yield some very positive commercial outcomes. It really is win-win.”

SBN has a range of tools and resources, events and advice to help our members with their sustainability commitments. We’ll check in with them during the year to see how they’re getting on and we’ll share the collective impact at the end of the financial year.

We’re looking forward to seeing the difference we can make together!
