WATER – Alsco steps up to help restore New Zealand’s waterways

14 March 2017

Alsco helps keep New Zealand’s businesses clean and healthy. It has just signed a partnership with the Sustainable Business Network’s Million Metres Streams project to do the same for the nation’s waterways.

Alsco provides fully managed rental linen, uniform, floorcare, first aid and hygiene supplies. The company currently helps more than 27,000 businesses from Kaitaia to Stewart Island. Million Metres is an online crowdfunding platform raising money to restore the banks of New Zealand’s waterways. Alsco has announced a three year partnership with Million Metres. As well as boosting the project’s fundraising efforts, company staff will work together with the project team to help plant native plants and trees along waterways around the country. The intention is to help restore native wildlife and cleaner waters to New Zealand’s streams, rivers and lakes.

Million Metres was created and is managed by the Sustainable Business Network, in partnership with the Department of Conservation. The project’s vision is to support the planting of one million metres of New Zealand waterway in the next few years. Beginning in 2014, it has so far raised funds to plant more than 15km (15,000m) of waterways in 15 projects around New Zealand.

Alsco is also a member of the SBN. Alsco is working with sustainability experts in the SBN network of more than 500 businesses to help make New Zealand a model sustainable nation.

Mark Roberts, Alsco group general manager, said: “Alsco has been helping to create clean. healthy workplaces in New Zealand since 1910. As a major water user, we have a particular responsibility on this issue. We want to do whatever we can to help. We have comprehensive environmental and sustainability policies in place and are always looking to minimise our impact on the environment. This is a real and collaborative way we can also help restore our landscape for generations to come.”

Georgina Hart, Million Metres Project Manager said: “One of the unique aspects of Million Metres is that we combine public crowdfunding with support from businesses that want to help make an impact on this issue. Companies like Alsco are not only contributing, but leading the way with their actions.”
