WATER – The Body Shop is backing NZ’s rivers

16 May 2017

The Body Shop is a global skin care company. It operates in 66 countries. The NZ branch is helping tackle the nation’s freshwater crisis. It has signed a three year partnership with the Sustainable Business Network’s Million Metres Streams project.

This year, The Body Shop New Zealand will donate 20 cents from each Body Butter sold to Million Metres. The partnership will help collectively fund a million metres of native tree planting along waterways.

In doing so, The Body Shop NZ will become a part of a nationwide movement of Kiwis and businesses. Million Metres combines public crowdfunding with support from businesses that want to help restore New Zealand’s waterways.

Social activism has run through the company in one way or another since its beginning in 1976. Dame Anita Roddick founded the company on the notion that business can be a force for good.

The international business has an ‘Enrich Not Exploit’ manifesto. It has 14 targets to achieve by 2020. The targets are the first step towards achieving its aim of ‘becoming the most ethical and truly sustainable global business’. The main environmental cause has been fighting the deforestation of the Amazon.

The New Zealand branch has chosen to act locally. The team has already helped improve water quality of the stream beside its headquarters. Ten years ago it moved into its Wellington Retail Support Centre. The stream behind the building was in a poor state. The team worked with the Wellington Regional Council and has managed to bring the stream back to life.

Barrie Thomas, owner, The Body Shop New Zealand, said: “We’ve always believed that businesses have responsibilities towards the communities in which they operate. Community problems are our problems and we like to be part of the solution whenever we can. Freshwater needs to improve and we’d love for our staff and customers throughout the country to have the opportunity to help achieve this.”

Georgina Hart, Million Metres Project Manager said: “It’s great to see more businesses supporting the restoration of our waterways. To have a nationwide business like The Body Shop on board helps get a significant amount of New Zealanders taking action.
