We are a social enterprise providing free, good, trustworthy advice about sustainable living solutions (including residential energy, waste and water). We share our knowledge because we want to help our community, our environment & future generations

Sustainability Options is a business with a commitment to community, social and environmental outcomes. Our focus and expertise centers around the delivery of sustainability initiatives and the engagement of domestic households, small businesses, community centers and schools. Our desire is to make a positive, long lasting, and significant difference in the communities we serve.

Our background and experience is in the delivery of energy, water and waste related solutions: domestic home energy advice, small business energy advice, domestic renewable heating systems, domestic and rural solar water heating installations, domestic solar PV installations, rain water harvesting, domestic double glazing, energy efficient lighting, waste minimisation projects, composting, worm farms, waste recycling, home health audits, energy conservation initiatives, classroom ventilation research, school energy education, energy efficient appliances, demand shifting, insulation, new building sustainability advice and not for profit community outcomes.

Sustainability Options seeks to do business by engaging customers where they are at. We will visit homes or businesses, seeking to understand behaviours and offering advice with a focus on long term sustainability. Our core competency is: relevant, specialist, advice that people can trust.

Our vision is to direct 85 per cent of our profits back to: charity, to community, to our vision for doing good, to our staff and back to our customers.

What or how does your business contribute to a more sustainable NZ?

As we look around the world, it's hard (in fact, very, very hard) not to notice the inequity, the suffering, the poverty, the injustice. It's all around us; shaping and challenging the way we live life (if we choose to look beyond our own immediate needs).

As we at Sustainability Options (SO) have chosen to look at the world through this perspective, we have found it hard not to be inspired, not to be challenged, not to be passionate about doing our bit to create a better world. Inspiration sounds like an oxymoron in this context, but when we consider the billions of people who live in poverty, the tragedy of war and greed, the injustice of inequity and the fact that we are living in a world where our environment is in decline and the rate of decline is accelerating – the inspiration of restoration, sustenance and resilience is truly motivating and deserving of passion.

So we started – two dads, two husbands, two brothers who decided to put their money where their hearts are, and to create a business orientated around social justice, environmental care and charitable good.

And what’s really cool is that there is now three of us: Jo, Nik and Phil. Three people totally committed to trying to ‘do business for the good of others’.

Our vision is to see a world served by compassionate business for the common good of all humanity for the benefit of future generations. Shouldn't people know and trust that business can care too?

We see and have experienced that business is a powerful vehicle, an embedded and powerful part of our culture, we see that the market plays such a big part of humanity and the way we function. It makes sense for business to take the lead in addressing the issues of inequity, social injustice, environmental concern and poverty. But, the current mantra for business survival seems to be 'profit at all costs'. We believe good business can be and should be more than profit. Our catch-cry is “business for need, not for greed”. What would the world look like if we matched profit with care or compassion or concern – business for care, business with compassion.
