Zion Technologies Limited and SBANZ are hosting the launch and demonstration of one of New Zealand’s first community-scale Vanadium Flow Battery (VFB) energy storage systems, installed in Pōkeno.
This project supports 62 residential homes in the Pōkeno community and combines 250 kW of solar panels installed across two large buildings with a Vanadium Flow Battery system supplied by Zion Technologies Limited.
The system includes four 10 kW / 40 kWh vanadium flow battery units, designed to store excess solar energy generated during the day and provide reliable energy supply during evening demand periods. Vanadium flow batteries are particularly suited for renewable integration due to their long operational life (25+ years) and ability to cycle daily without degradation.
This installation represents an important step toward building local energy resilience and supporting New Zealand’s transition to a renewable energy future.
To mark this milestone, Zion Technologies Limited and SBANZ are hosting a launch event where attendees will have the opportunity to learn about long-duration energy storage and see the system in operation.
