Transformational Leadership
2025 AWARD COMMENDATION
As the driving force behind Te Pu-a-Nga Maara (TPNM), a rangatahi (youth)-led taiao collective in South Auckland, Krissy is growing the next generation of environmental leaders. She is a powerhouse leader, mover and shaker, and kaupapa-driven to her core.
TPNM's structure flips traditional hierarchies. Rangatahi are the leaders and are involved in all areas of the organisation. When TPNM became a charitable trust, rangatahi were paired with board members to grow their confidence and capability in leadership.
Since 2019, TPNM has planted over 57,000 native plants. Sixteen rangatahi have been employed as Taiao Rangers, with some supported to launch their own environmental enterprises. The organisation has also initiated 179 training sessions for rangatahi, covering topics from bee keeping and rongoā (Māori natural medicine) to chainsaw certifications and innovation.
Before TPNM, Krissy started Neat Streets, a hands-on waste programme responding to illegal dumping in Kainga Ora neighbourhoods. It wasn't just about cleaning up. Whānau were involved in sorting, fixing and reclaiming items. She also brought together 23 different environmental groups in South Auckland to form a regional Taiao Collective, building strategic partnerships across marae, council and DOC.
Krissy blends innovation with ancestral wisdom. Her Giveback Days invite schools, businesses and locals to restore waterways and connect deeply with the whenua. She's not just talking about change, she's making it happen and equipping the next generation to lead environmental action from the ground up.
The judges said: "Krissy Bishop is a powerhouse of grassroots environmental leadership. Through Te Pū-ā-Nga Māra, she is empowering rangatahi to reconnect with te taiao and take action for their communities. Her vision and energy are growing the next generation of kaitiaki from the ground up."
