Dimension Shopfitters has been involved with the strip outs and fit outs of some of Auckland’s most exclusive and high-end retail brands. A lot of these projects have involved very tight turnaround times inside large shopping malls - sites that are typically difficult to get a skip bin into. The team at Dimension Shopfitters wanted to do a better job diverting waste from landfill.
The solution
To help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, Dimension Shopfitters has partnered with Junk Run for the past few years.
Junk Run Construction Sales Manager Dave Knight helped Dimension Shopfitters set up Waste Management Plans and explore waste reduction options for their projects. This involved providing a selection of wheelie bins to each site so waste could be separated onsite as much as possible. This maximises resource recovery and recycling potential, reduces waste stream contamination and double handling, and enables accurate waste reporting.
Each site manager got on board to support the changes and implement the new resource recovery systems with builders and subcontractors. This meant that the Junk Run team could ensure items like plasterboard, insulation, electrical wire and timber offcuts were repurposed or recycled properly. At the conclusion of each project, a full waste impact report was provided back to the Dimension Shopfitters management team detailing the amount of valuable resource recovery and landfill diversion achieved.
Benefits
Together Junk Run and Dimension Shopfitters managed the waste from shop fit outs in 2022 for Lululemon activewear stores, Spec Savers, Foot Locker, Dotti and Chemist Warehouse.
The aim was to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill from each site. In addition, Junk Run helped Dimension Shopfitters to reuse, repurpose and recycle unneeded items and materials in its factory and warehouse. Some of the items were reused by tiny home builders. Materials were also donated to a South Auckland initiative that takes vulnerable year 12 and 13 youth from low decile schools and provides work experience on construction sites. Some items, such as lockers and bins, were also gifted to a social enterprise facility that employs differently abled adults. Overall, the partnership resulted in 96% waste diversion from landfill. Of this, 87% of materials from the factory and warehouse were reused and 9% of materials were recycled.
