As you can probably guess, the rabbits and extreme weather created a few challenges. Meanwhile, the botanist helped a team return life to Baring Head, near Wellington.

Since starting in 2014, the Million Metres Stream project has raised more than $5 million. That money has helped get more than 500,000 plants and trees into the ground across more than 45 project sites.
Our report includes first-hand updates from eight of those projects. It looks at some of the challenges and achievements over the past year. One of biggest hurdles was securing funding. That became an even bigger issue when the government’s Jobs for Nature scheme came to an end in June 2024.
Fortunately, that funding gap was partly filled by our generous donors and supporters. Thank you to NZ Safety Blackwoods and Alsco who are key supporters of the MMS programme, enabling SBN to profile community groups and connect them to funders. The Million Metres project also receives 5% of the membership fee paid by organisations that are SBN Impact Investors. Their money helped plant 19,190 trees across 61 planting days in 4 regions. At the same time 1,134 volunteers donated 27,899 hours to nine groups.
After a decade it’s encouraging to see some of our established projects are now planting canopy species including rimu, tōtara and pūriri. The projects and the trees are really growing up!
On behalf of all the SBN Nature Project partners, we extend heartfelt thanks to our generous donors and supporters. As well as supporting groups to plant trees, your donations helped mobilise communities to connect, learn, take action and build resilience.
