Fonterra and the Department of Conservation (DoC) have joined forces to respond to the farming and freshwater challenge through the 10-year Living Water partnership. This is in recognition that New Zealand’s economic, cultural and social wellbeing depends on healthy ecosystems.
The partnership combines DoC’s restoration expertise with Fonterra’s dairying knowledge. Working together side by side on the ground in five dairying regions, the purpose of the partnership is to implement game-changing and scalable solutions that will enable farming, freshwater and healthy ecosystems to thrive side-by-side.
The approach is to show people what sustainable dairying and healthy freshwater ecosystems look like thriving together; identify what capability, capacity and support is required to achieve it across New Zealand; and calculate the cost so farmers, communities and the agricultural industry can plan for future investment. The partnership brings together two of New Zealand’s most significant land stewards on a mission to connect farmers, scientists, councils, mana whenua and local communities to make a real difference for freshwater and sustainable farming in New Zealand.
