Real Journeys is a New Zealand tourism company that operates in the South Island. At Lake Wakatipu in Otago it has begun to restore the landscape of a high country farm.
A 10 year project is now underway to remove pine trees and plant native trees to return the land to the vegetation of 100 years ago.
Real Journeys takes visitors across Lake Wakatipu for a high country farm experience. Over the years the farm has gradually become covered by an invasive wilding pine forest that blanketed the land with conifer needles and destroyed the natural habitat.
Real Journeys purchased the 155 hectares of high country land it had been leasing in 2013. It then logged and cleared the pine trees over two years. 12,000 native plants and trees have been planted. The weeding and replanting is expected to go on until at least 2023. The initiative has been carried out in partnership with the Department of Conservation and the Wakatipu Wilding Conifer Control Group.
Real Journeys is a finalist in the Restoring Nature category of the 2017 NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards
